THE Right Reverend Richard Holloway's latest controversy as Scottish Arts Council chief is one of a series in his public career.

The former Episcopal bishop of Edinburgh, now 72, once questioned the truth of the gospels.

And his ultra-liberal views saw him argue for gay and lesbian rights and the ordination of women priests.

He publicly questioned his own beliefs - calling himself a "recovering Christian" - and called for legalising cannabis and accepting sex outside marriage.

Last year, he conducted the funeral for atheist Robin Cook at St Giles'Cathedral in Edinburgh.

He also performed the blessing of Scotland's first gay "wedding", at St Margaret's Chapel in Edinburgh Castle.
