Thoughts on our bishop search
Much is being made of the statements of Bishop Smith and Bishop Steenson about the "mind of the house of bishops" regarding consent to a bishop-elect who is a gay man or lesbian. I would like to point out that their perspective is just that - their perspective. It is not a perspective universally shared by all members of the House of Bishops.
I find it helpful to keep reminding people that the diocese of California has NOT yet elected its 8th. bishop. All of the nominees are holy and gifted people. We do not "need" a bishop who is gay or lesbian in the Diocese of California. We need to elect the person God is calling. Whoever we elect will proclaim boldly the good news of God's love in Christ Jesus.
Perfect love casts out fear. Thus, when we do elect our next bishop, IF he or she is gay or lesbian, there will be enough votes in both houses for consent.
