Did the Conservative Anglicans just propose an ecclesiastical coup d'état?
A bevy of conservative Anglican Bishops have fired the latest volley in their war to seize control of the Anglican Communion and drive the US Episcopal Church from their communion. In a newly released Communique, the bishops reject actions by the US Church's House of Bishops as positive assessment of the US Bishop's actions by the Standing Committee (JSC) of the Primates and the Anglican Consultative Council.
They call for a special meeting of primates (leasers of national churches) would be called to set a time line for adoption of a controversial "covenant.' Adoption and adherence of this covenant - the first ever proposed for the Anglican Communion - would then be used to decide which bishops are admitted to an international meeting of bishops (the "Lambeth Conference") currently scheduled for 2008. Under the conservative power play, the Lambeth session would be postponed to "Ensure that those invited to the Lambeth Conference have already endorsed the Covenant." Since the Covenant has not been well received by many wester churches. If enacted, it would make it very difficult for the Anglican church in Canada, England, the US and Wales (to name a few) to remain within a "Creedal" Anglican Communion. The bishop's proposal surelooks like an attempted ecclesiastical coup d'état.
If the Archbishop of Canterbury does not bow to this power play and postpone Lambeth, " several provinces unable to participate and hundreds of bishops absent." Some provinces, such as the Nigerian Church, have been making lots of new bishops. Maybe hundreds of new bishops.
The ultra-conservative bishops write: "On first reading we find it to be unsatisfactory. The assurances made are without credibility and its preparation is severely compromised by numerous conflicts of interest. The report itself appears to be a determined effort to find a way for the full inclusion of The Episcopal Church with no attempt at discipline or change from their prior position."
Specifically, ulta-conservative bishops called for a special meeting of primates (leaders of national churches) where they believe they have sufficient votes to impose a new order on the Anglican Communion by:

Specifically, ulta-conservative bishops called for a special meeting of primates (leaders of national churches) where they believe they have sufficient votes to impose a new order on the Anglican Communion by:
- Reviewing the actual New Orleans actions by the US Episcopal Church's mHouse of Bishops (actions which these bishops have already branded as inadequate).
- Finalize the Covenant proposal and set a timetable for ratification by individual provinces.
- Postpone current plans for the Lambeth Conference. We recognize that such an action will be costly, however, we believe that the alternative - a divided conference with several provinces unable to participate and hundreds of bishops absent would be much more costly to our life and witness. It would bring an end to the Communion, as we know it. Postponement will accomplish the following:
- Allow the current tensions to subside and leave room for the hard work of reconciliation that must be done.
- Ensure that those invited to the Lambeth Conference have already endorsed the Covenant and so can come together as witness to our common faith.
