Focusing on Maine's Bishop Chilton as a person
Our interview this week is with Maine's Episcopal Bishop Chilton Knudsen. This may be one of those stories I tried too hard on. It's good, but for some reason it just doesn't sing. A good TV story is sharply focused, and it was hard for me to stay on the topic, which was Bishop Chilton and not the issues within the church.
I joined the Episcopal church and was married at St Luke's Cathedral on May 3, 1986. (In fact, due to a technicality, Bishop Chilton confirmed me about seven years ago.) My family and I attend Trinity on Forest Avenue in Portland. While I try not to be too involved in church politics, it is hard to avoid them right now. The Episcopal Church is going through enormous changes.
I tried to do the story as objectively as possible, and perhaps made it too flat. It was hard for me to cut out all the issues and focus on Bishop Chilton as a person, which is what I wanted the story to be. I'll be interested in hearing what you think.
Also, I'd like to say that church has been a wonderful part of my life. If you're thinking about going, give it a try, you might find it as rewarding as I have.
