This seems like a good time to get married

By David Deerfeeder

This month, I will take advantage of the recent California Supreme Court decision allowing same-sex marriage by marrying my partner.

There is a flurry of pro and con discussion concerning the appropriateness of same-sex marriage. Our religious tradition has sanctioned same sex unions for years, so this is not a radical step within our faith community. I see a distinction between marriage and matrimony and believe if a religious tradition does not wish to sanction same-sex matrimony, that is their right. I do not believe they should be allowed to determine my legal rights, however, and I choose to marry the man I love.

Both pro and con are conjecturing about the legal chess games ahead. Will the window for same-sex marriages be closed? Will it remain open? What to do?

I am not na ve, but I am also not worrying about what might happen. I am far too busy marveling that when I was a young gay teenager in the 1960s, the possibility of actually having a relationship - let alone a loving, life-long marriage - with another man seemed impossible.

Sometimes I think about those folks born at the turn of the 20th century who loved to say, "This is what I witnessed in one lifetime: Going from the first powered flight to landing on the moon." I wonder, what will I say that I saw in my lifetime?

Here is some of what I have seen so far: This seems like a good time to get married
