SF: LESBIAN, FEMINIST AND SAME-SEX MARRIAGE PIONEER DEL MARTIN DIES

longtime leader of the women's movement, lesbian rights movement and most recently the quest for the right to same-sex marriage died in San Francisco today.

Del Martin, 87, died at a hospice at the side of her partner and spouse, Phyllis Lyon, 83. The death was announced by the National Center for Lesbian Rights in San Francisco.

Martin and Lyon were among the plaintiffs in the landmark lawsuit in which the California Supreme Court ruled in May that the state constitution provides a right for same-sex couples to marry. See SF: LESBIAN, FEMINIST AND SAME-SEX MARRIAGE PIONEER DEL MARTIN DIES
