Richard Rohr Event Feb. 22, 2009
Richard Rohr OFM, internationally recognized author and spiritual
teacher, a Franciscan of the New Mexico province and founder of the
Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, will speak on
Sunday, February 22 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in San Francisco.
The talk will occur from 1:30 to 4:30pm in St. Ignatius Church on the
campus of the University of San Francisco (USF), 650 Parker Avenue at
the corner of Parker and Fulton. Enter the church on Fulton. Parking
available in University lot on Parker St. across from church.
Richard Rohr's Sunday afternoon talk will explore the little known or
understood role of silent prayer (Contemplation) in the 21st Century,
suggesting that in relating to God in this way, one is gradually open
and capable of becoming a new person, seeing the world with the eyes
and heart of Christ, relating to all peoples in oneness of spirit and
therefore encouraging and nurturing one's everyday actions to grow out
of and be guided by this spiritual transformation.
Based on his lifelong ministries to women, men and children on a
spiritual path, to prison inmates, to those seeking social and
political justice, to people of alcohol, substance and other
addictions, to males seeking a deeper spirituality in their lives, Fr.
Rohr will draw deeply from his Christian contemplative roots and
personal ministries to communicate his unique and engaging 21st
Century gospel message of personal healing, abiding inner peace, and
practical ways to daily live the message.
The talk, entitled "Contemplation (and Action) in the 21st Century" is
being co-sponsored by Contemplative Outreach of San Francisco and the
Jesuit USF's Department of Theology and Religious Studies.
Proceeds of this Bay area-wide event will be used for Contemplative
Outreach Prison Ministry in Northern California prisons and jails,
both training volunteers to teach and bring Centering Prayer to
inmates and also to provide books for the prayer libraries in prison
institutions.
