Episcopal Bishops in New England, Iowa Expect Gay-Marriage Requests

Since the Episcopal Church ruled Friday that bishops in states where same-sex marriage is legal can "provide generous pastoral response'' to gay couples, bishops are preparing for a wave of requests for gay marriages in Episcopal churches.

Despite the denomination's resolution Friday, gay marriage is still not technically condoned by the church.

The language in the resolution could refer to a marital blessing, which is less formal than officiating over a marriage.

Bishops interviewed by the source say that the Book of Common Prayer says marriages should only be performed when they conform to the laws of the state. In states like Maine, where there is a referendum on the ballot to strike down gay marriage, the interpretation of how to proceed is nebulous.
